Laura was a lacrosse player from Pennsylvania whom Christopher had met through her college roommate Paige McNinch, whom Cross was dating at the time. He wrote the song as a way of offering comfort to McNinch, and respecting Carter's memory. It was written in collaboration between Cross, pop legend Burt Bacharach , and Bacharach's frequent writing partner and then-wife Carole Bayer Sager.
This was a massive success from Christopher's debut album, helping him to win five Grammys including Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Arguably the greatest yacht rock song ever, Cross has said that its inspiration was his friendship with an older friend from high school, Al Glasscock, who would take him sailing as a teenager. He finally reunited with Al in after 28 years, and sent him a copy of the platinum LP he earned for selling more than five million copies of 'Sailing'.
From his debut album, this excellent soft rock track tells the story of a condemned criminal on the run to Mexico. He described it as "sort of a romanticized Western where the bad guy gets away. As a mark of a truly great '80s power ballad, it also features Michael McDonald on backing vocals. The problem with this compilation is that it doesn't take into consideration that early peak -- it treats each album with equal respect, with as many songs taken from 's Walking in Avalon and Red Room as from 's Another Page.
While this may satisfy the artist and the die-hards who have listened with dedication over the years, those who loved the warm soft rock of the albums -- either as a guilty pleasure or without shame -- will find this collection profoundly disappointing, since after the eighth track, the collection takes a sharp turn toward fussy, sterile adult contemporary production, and it's never as pleasing to the ear as those first eight songs.
This is a problem, because the collection succeeds in one respect providing a comprehensive history while failing in another being an enjoyable listen.
Though some will undoubtedly like this approach to Cross ' career, most will wish that the compilers took Cross ' early peak into account, since this collection would have been much more enjoyable.
