Etrex vista hcx sale

The vista hcx altimeter and electronic compass work great! Very simple to use and when I had the choice of legend vs vista and the GPS thing was new to me, I just wanted something that did it all- that way I can decide if I would need it or not, rather than buying something and wishing I had it. If you really want to see the difference, read the manual for these units. They go in great depth on different options etc.

Better yet, check out the Cx manual as it has even more info than the HCx manual. I find the Electronic compasses to be near useless and finicky. Not worth the extra money. The "movement" compass on the Legend works just fine. I dont even take a magnetic compass with me anymore. I have a Summit HC, which has the compass and barometric altimeter like the Vista HCx, but lacks the expandable memory and auto-routing. The compass works great, even when standing still - you just have to remember to re-calibrate whenever you change batteries, and hold the unit level.

Garmin's compasses won't work properly with the unit held in any position except horizontal, screen facing up. People complain about this, and how a 3-axis unit would be better - but guess what - that's exactly how you have to hold a conventional compass too!

The GPS pointer only works when moving, and can be pretty erratic at very low speed. I use my GPSr under some pretty dense tree cover, and it can be very difficult or even impossible to move quickly enough to get the GPS pointer to work. The built-in compass has never failed me yet.

You can also use "Sight'n'Go" to visually sight a course to a feature, and then the GPSr will keep you on track even when you lose sight of your destination - very handy when navigating in rough country, and you don't have good maps to be able to mark a destination waypoint. Not everyone needs this, I know, but I found it really handy when doing some remote site exploration in Kalimantan, where we could not get any good quality maps in paper form, let along Garmin topo maps we could load onto my GPSr!

I don't think there is an equivalent way of doing this conveniently on units without a compass. The barometric altimeter also works really well, as long as you calibrate manually at the start of each day's recording, and have auto-calibrate set "on" - MUCH more accurate and reliable than GPS elevation, especially when in an area with less than optimal GPS reception such as in canyons, or under very dense tree cover, etc.

The base map is just that, a base map, which is fine because I didn't buy this to replace my travel GPS in the car, and neither should you. The built-in electronic compass is a great feature, if it worked correctly. While out geocaching, the compass will tell me that the cache is located 25' SW and while we're walking in that direction, the compass will suddenly point and say the cache is located 25' in the opposite direction.

This has happened almost every single time, until we stop and calibrate the compass, then it seems to work ok. But we shouldn't have to calibrate the compass every time we use it, right? I do like the audible feature that beeps to let you know you are getting close to your coordinates. But sometimes it beeps at 50' away and sometimes it doesn't beep until 10' away.

We haven't tested out the alimeter yet so I can't comment on its functionality. Overall this is a pretty decent compass to point you in the direction you need to go. Still "iffy" about this one Excellent hand-held GPS receiver. I bought this due to the fact that it is portable, waterproof, has a barometer and is easy to use for Geocaching, and also comes with accessories that make it easy to transfer to my boat and my car.

This a great little do-it-all unit. The only downside is that it has a small screen that is not the most ideal for travelling via automobile. However, I knew this limitation before I bought it and for my purposes, this is an acceptable tradeoff.

If you are serious about buying a unit for your car, then I recommend that you get a large screen GPSR that is specially made for use in a car. This one works fine in a car for light use, just not recommended for large metro areas as you have to pan the map and do not have turn by turn directions. Skip to main content. About this product. Read full review. This is a lovely little GPS device. It is easy in the hand and easy to use. I needed to upgrade the maps to topo GB as the maps that come on the memory are not good for trekking which is why i bought the device. I took out in the snow and the device kept shutting down the other day but the temp was below -2!

I have done numerous walks with the device without any trouble. Compared with the competitions prices I am happy with this GPS. However i wish I could upload customizable maps onto it like you can on the more expensive units but you can't have everything. Overall - very good. I don't recall what the fault was with the Legend C, but it didn't work well under tree coverage.

The HCx fixed that, so to that extent it was all I wanted. The additional memory card means that it has contour maps of the whole of the UK, another huge benefit. So far, I've used it only along the local paths that I know like the back of my hand, so it hasn't faced any challenges, but it has worked well there at least I know that it's telling me the truth, as I know where I am. I'll enjoy using it in unfamiliar territory in future.

We bought this to replace a unit which I lost. We are very pleasd with the facility to load routes, either our own or those posted by other walkers. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned. Skip to main content. About this product. Make an offer:. Stock photo.
